Your resume is much more than a compilation of your work history; it is a tool that lets hiring managers know that you are the candidate they have been hoping for. Recruiters and hiring managers have seen every type of resume format imaginable. For maximum wow-factor, you must build a resume that highlights your industry-specific experience, accomplishments, and credentials, as well as important skills.
Do not just list all the responsibilities you had at your previous jobs in your resume. Show how you were an asset to the company. The most important thing a future employer wants to know is what you will do for them. Say how you came up with a new idea, saved your past employer money, got a specific result, or anything that is a quantifiable detail.
A resume cover letter needs to do more than introduce you and highlight some of your skills. It needs to be engaging, well crafted, and well researched. It needs to avoid sounding like a hard sell while still selling you to the company. If a resume is a list of your accomplishments, then its cover letter is where you get to tell the story of how you achieved those accomplishments. Use it to explain how your experiences will benefit the company. Tell the potential employer why this job is important to you.
