Resumes and cover letters go hand in hand. In fact, it is the job of a cover letter to get an employer interested enough in you as a candidate to take the time to look at your resume. Your cover letter should focus on just a few skills and accomplishments that are the most relevant to your target job. It should be succinct, include easy to scan bullet points to call out information and should always be customized to the specific job posting you are responding to.
Do not just list all the responsibilities you had at your previous jobs in your resume. Show how you were an asset to the company. The most important thing a future employer wants to know is what you will do for them. Say how you came up with a new idea, saved your past employer money, got a specific result, or anything that is a quantifiable detail.
If your resume does its job, you will be getting a call for a job interview. The key to a successful interview is preparation. That means learning all you can about the company and position, preparing answers for common interview questions and knowing your own career story inside and out. A job interview can be an intimidating experience for anyone – even more so for someone headed in for their first ever job interview. The best thing you can do to calm your nerves is be well prepared.
